Lot of 5 Excavated Civil War US Plates:

1) US Pattern 1839 Variant Small US Plate. Nominally 65mm x 42mm, although most of the rim is missing, making the long axis measurement shorter than it would have been had the plate been complete. Stamped brass face with rolled edge and embossed "US", lead filled rear. A single centered brass arrow hook and tongue remain present. Rear of plate marked "P'VILLE" and "APR 75". This suggests the plate was dug in Pikeville, KY or some similarly named location in April of 1975. Plate #520 in O'Donnell & Campbell's book is of the same basic pattern and was recovered in a pre-Civil War site in Peabody, KY.

2) US Pattern 1839 Oval US Belt Plate - late war with arrow hooks. Nominally 58mm x 86mm. Stamped brass face with rolled edge and embossed "US", lead filled rear, missing one arrow hook with one hook and tongue intact.

3) E. Gaylord marked US oval US Box Plate, nominally 55mm x 85mm. Stamped brass face with rolled edge and embossed "US", lead filled rear, with both iron loops intact. Lead stamped weakly "E. GAYLORD" and with an '87" and an "F". Written on the lead is "CHANCELLORSVILLE / APRIL 1981 / PRUITTS".

4)  US oval US Box Plate, nominally 55mm x 85mm. Stamped brass face with rolled edge and embossed "US", lead filled rear, with both iron loops missing. Unmarked.

5)  US oval US Box Plate, nominally 59mm x 89mm. Stamped brass face with rolled edge and embossed "US", lead filled rear, with both iron loops missing. Unmarked.

[CIViL WAR]{DUG RELICS]{MILITARIA]

1) Fair dug condition with moderate loss to the brass face as well as some lead loss. Both hooks intact.

2) Fair dug condition with damage to the edges of the brass face and some lead loss on the rear. One arrow hook broken off, other hook and tongue intact.

3) Fine dug condition. Face with a rich, uncleaned brown patina, lead with moderate oxidation. Face with some minor dings and mars. Both iron loops intact.

4) Good dug condition. Face with a thick, rich, uncleaned brown patina, lead with moderate oxidation. Face and rim with some dings and mars. Both iron loops are missing.

5) Fair to Good dug condition. Face somewhat concave, indicative of having been run over by a wheel or something similar, with the outer edges rolled up and some epoxy repair and support. Face with dings and dents and a heavily oxidized woodsy green patina with some brown. Lead heavily oxidized, both iron loops missing.
