Wooden crate, exterior painted red, with original rope handles. Both ends are stenciled in white as follows: "8 Rounds / 12 Pdr. Gun / SPH, Case / 1864". Additionally, the length side is faintly stenciled "From / Watervliet / Arsenal" in the same white paint and "No fuze" in black, and a legible "With Sabot" is stenciled to one end in black. Approx. 22 x 12 3/4 x 9 7/8 in.
This crate would have accommodated eight spherical 12lb artillery shells, intended for use with one of the various models of 12 pounder field gun, naval gun or howitzer of the day. A fine wartime product of New York's Watervliet Arsenal. Despite some losses to the wood, the overall construction, held with rabbet joints and iron nails, has stood the test of time.
