Millard Fillmore Medal. Struck silver medal. [New York]: Salathiel Ellis, obverse artist; Joseph Willson, reverse artist, 1850. 76mm. Tested between .8 and .925 silver, 237.1 g. Pierced for suspension and strung with Russian Blue cobalt bead necklace. Julian-IP-30; Belden 46; Prucha 48.
Obverse features a profile bust portrait of President Fillmore with the legend: "MILLARD FILLMORE PRESIDENT OF THE UNITED STATES". Die signed in exergue "S. ELLIS" below bust and "1850 at lower edge.
Reverse shows an American settler and a Native American superimposed on a large waving American flag. "LABOR / VI[RTU]E / HONOR" in linked chain. Die signed in exergue "J. WILLSON" to lower edge.

Large size Fillmore peace medal enhanced with a strand of Russian blue cobalt beads. The first of the peace medals to employ the instructive "LABOR VIRTUE HONOR" motif, a shift from the earlier "PEACE AND FRIENDSHIP" reverse. Precise numbers are elusive; however, Prucha states 119 large (76 mm) and 162 small (62 mm) were produced. Of these, 25 large and 40 small were melted for use in the Franklin Pierce medals.
