William Sartain, engraver. Grant and his Family. [Philadelphia: N.p., ca. 1867]. 24 1/4 x 18 1/4 in., matted and framed to 29 1/4 x 22 1/4 in.
A fine post-war lithograph of General Ulysses S. Grant (1822 - 1885), wife Julia Grant (1816 - 1902), and children Frederick (1850 - 1912), Ulysses Jr. (1852 - 1929), Nellie (1855 - 1922), and Jessie II (1858 - 1934). The pre-presidential Grant wears 4-star General of the Army shoulder boards, of which two of the stars are visible. His eldest sons wear shell jackets and matching trousers. A portrait of the late Abraham Lincoln (1809 - 1865) stands out against the wall in the background.
This lithograph was produced during Grant's tenure as General of the Army, a rank which he held from 1866 to 1869. Grant would resign this commission and forfeit his tenure upon becoming president.
