A gorgeously framed albumen shot of Ulysses S. Grant’s first tomb in Riverside Park, New York. This was a temporary burial site for Grant while his official mausoleum, the General Grant National Memorial, was being completed. He was buried in Riverside Park from 1885 until 1897.
After terms as a successful lieutenant general and commander of the Union and then U.S. armies, as well as two terms as U.S. president, Grant died on 23 July 1885 after battling throat cancer. President Grover Cleveland ordered a thirty-day mourning period following his funeral, in which 1.5 million people attended.
This photograph was taken by the Pach Brothers, a studio run by German-born brothers Gustavus (1848-1904), Gotthelf (1852-1925), and Morris (1837-1914) Pach. The brothers photographed notable people such as President Benjamin Harrison and American banker George Foster Peabody. A fire in 1895 destroyed their New York studio, but the Pach family continued working in photography until the firm dissolved in 1994.
