A pleasing family portrait taken during the 18th president's waning months at his cottage on the slope of Mount McGregor, New York. Similar images of Grant (1822-1885) seated on the porch and surrounded by family, presumably taken on the same day per the subjects' identical outfits, are known. This example sets itself apart from the rest in the amount of the cottage shown, and the large format additionally offers superior clarity.
Arranged about the top hatted Grant are the following relatives, clockwise from left: wife Julia Grant (1826-1902); unknown, possibly daughter Nellie Grant (1855-1922); son Frederick Grant (1850-1912); daughter-in-law Ida Honoré Grant (1854-1930); granddaughter Miriam Grant (1881-1940); granddaughter Julia Dent Cantacuzène Speransky-Grant (1876-1975); grandson Ulysses S. Grant III (1881-1968); and daughter-in-law Elizabeth Chapman Grant (1858-1945).
Grant was diagnosed with cancer in the fall of 1884. He would withdraw to the cabin the following summer and devote himself to the completion of his memoirs, passing on 23 July 1885. Per the setting, this photograph was among the last struck of the famed Union general.
