Half-plate studio portrait daguerreotype. Boston, Massachusetts: Attributed to Albert Sands Southworth & Josiah Johnson Hawes, ca. early 1850s. Housed in a dark brown half-plate thermoplastic union case molded with the iconic pictorial motif "American Country Life – Summer's Evening" (Berg 1-11; Krainik 9); interior lid retains its original plush deep wine/maroon velvet facing pad.

A masterfully executed portrait exemplifying the pinnacle of American daguerreian artistry. Captured in a commanding bust-length pose slightly turned toward the right, the sitter possesses thoughtful, piercing eyes, styled wavy hair, and a neatly groomed chin beard. He is attired in sophisticated Bostonian fashion: a tailored dark frock coat worn over an intricate floral-patterned waistcoat, a high-standing white shirt collar, and a wide silk neckcloth fastened in a full bow with an ornamental stickpin.

The technical execution displays all the hallmark hallmarks of Boston's premier daguerreian studio, Southworth & Hawes: delicate handling of natural skylight that produces rich sculptural modeling across the face, soft transitions in the shadows, and razor-sharp tonal fidelity without harsh specular reflections. Working out of their studio at 5½ Tremont Row, Southworth & Hawes rejected the mechanical rigidity of commercial operators, approaching the daguerreotype as high portrait art.

The image is paired with one of the most celebrated pictorial thermoplastic cases ever produced: "American Country Life – Summer's Evening" (after the famed 1855 Currier & Ives lithograph by Frances Flora Bond Palmer). Molded in exceptional high relief, the intricate pastoral narrative depicts a sprawling country estate with a gabled manor house, fenced pastures with cattle, farmhands loading a two-horse hay wain in the fields, a distant church spire, and a running youth in the foreground waving his hat.

This pair would make a top-shelf addition to even the most advanced early photograpy collections.

Very good to fine condition overall. The daguerreotype exhibits superlative clarity, rich depth, and clean midtones with brilliant iridescent blue-gold perimeter tarnish hugging the inner oval bevel.
