Half-plate horizontal outdoor scene ambrotype. Wyoming, New York, ca. late 1850s. Modern ink identification in an accompanying note or backing identifies the location as the "Hawley Homestead in Wyoming, N.Y." Housed in a full dark brown leatherette case.
A tranquil Civil War-era rural homestead study capturing a Western New York farmstead in mid-19th-century calm. Set back across an open expanse and enclosed by an extensive white picket fence, the clapboard farmhouse features a central two-story gable block with an attached side wing and a broad, columned front veranda. Slender poplars frame the structure, while an outbuilding is visible among the trees in the right background.
Assembled along the fence and porch are the homestead's residents, paused in everyday tableau. Several family members stand on the veranda between the porch posts, while to the left of the gate, two mounted equestrians sit proudly on horseback in the yard, accompanied by a standing man in a dark hat holding the bridle.

Very good condition. The ambrotype surface exhibits fine midtone depth, clean contrast, and sharp focal definition. The glass plate shows only minor scattered pinpoint dusting beneath the cover glass and faint, honest tarnish to the extreme edges that gives the photo a pleasing vignette-like feel.
