Half-plate horizontal studio portrait ambrotype. N.p., ca. late 1850s. Housed in an uncommon full dark brown leather center-opening double-door ("French" or triptych style) case.

A captivating portrait depicting a vocal troupe posed in concert dress. Staged symmetrically in two tiers, three standing gentlemen in dark tailored frock coats, waistcoats, and wide silk cravats form the backdrop. Seated before them are two elegant female vocalists flanking a bearded male performer. The women wear matching or coordinated off-the-shoulder evening gowns with voluminous pleated skirts and lace mitts, their hair styled in smooth center parts with side ringlets. Resting across their laps and in the hands of the seated gentleman are two large, open choral books, signaling their professional repertoire.

During the 1840s and 1850s, popular touring singing groups crisscrossed the nation performing popular anthems, temperance ballads, abolitionist songs, and sacred choral works.

Large-format cased images documenting specific musical and stage ensembles with their instruments or score folios are scarce.

Adding substantial appeal is the rare, deluxe half-plate center-opening leather case.

Good to very good condition. The ambrotype exhibits fine contrast, clear focal depth, and rich detail. The plate displays light, scattered pinpoint dusting beneath the glass and faint chemical spotting studio backdrop field.
