A collection of seven vintage stereoview cards on orange cardstock mounts capturing historic structures and artifacts associated with General George Washington's final wartime encampment. Six of the card versos retain exceptionally comprehensive, hand-inked descriptive narratives that document an in-person research pilgrimage made on 21 October 1882.

This lot offers a superb nineteenth-century photographic exploration of the Hasbrouck House in Newburgh, New York, which served as Washington’s Headquarters from April 1782 until August 1783. It was at this site that Washington famously rejected the Newburgh Letter proposing he become king, defused the Newburgh Conspiracy mutiny, and issued the cessation of hostilities order ending the Revolutionary War. Rather than generic tourist souvenirs, these views were transformed by a dedicated late nineteenth-century historian into a deeply researched visual survey. The extensive ink notations record architectural orientations, the interior placement of Washington's furniture, local museum statistics from the early 1870s, and meticulous provenance tracking for specific captured relics - including a "Hessian boot." This important archive represents a phenomenal primary source demonstrating how early historic preservation sites were curated and interpreted during the post-Centennial era. The lot includes:

1. Panoramic Landscape of the Hudson River from Newburgh (Top Center): An outdoor landscape view taken from the high banks of the headquarters property, looking across the open water toward the prominent mountains of the Hudson Highlands with a small sailboat in the middle distance. The verso features a detailed ink description titled "View of the Hudson / Newburgh, N.Y." The writer details the geographic scope, noting that the view looks across the river toward Fishkill and describes the local ferry boats crossing the water. It provides an important piece of period infrastructure context by noting the presence of the New York Central and Hudson River Railroad tracks running along the eastern shore.

2. Distant Exterior View of the Hasbrouck House (Middle Left): A wide exterior view looking up across a manicured lawn toward the stone facade of Washington's Headquarters, framed by a young birch tree in the foreground and a historic cannon mounted on the grass at the far left. The reverse carries a lengthy architectural and historical log titled "Washington’s Head-quarters / Newburgh, N.Y." The writer provides a narrative tour, tracking the placement of the windows, the location of the back entrance door, and notes that while the stairs to the upper level are visible inside, the upper rooms contain nothing of historical interest.

3. Exterior View of the Headquarter Grounds and Stone Facade (Middle Right): A clean exterior study of the stone headquarters building, capturing the curving gravel carriage paths and mature trees surrounding the historic property. The reverse features a comprehensive layout analysis titled "Washington’s Head-quarters / Newburgh, N.Y." The narrative identifies a specific corner room that was used by the army's morocco officer, tracks the physical changes made to the grounds over the decades, and lists a local history anecdote regarding a small store nearby where patent medicines were sold.

4. Interior Study of Washington’s Famous Room with Seven Doors and One Window (Center Left): A highly significant interior view showcasing the unique architecture of the central living quarters inside the Hasbrouck House, revealing rough plaster walls, timber framing, an early fireplace hearth, period chairs, and various hanging historical artifacts. The reverse features a massive, tightly written description titled "Washington’s Head-quarters / Newburgh, N.Y. / The Fire Place." The writer records that the square pieces hanging against the wall are the ends of old log stoves. They describe the location of a hessian boot hanging over a chair, detail the old fire plows, tongs, and iron kettles inside the hearth, and explicitly note that the old table and chairs shown in the room are relics of early settlers.

5. Alternate Interior Study of the Artifact Display Room (Center Right): An interior view focusing on a different wall of the headquarters museum, documenting early display cases, a rustic storage table, framed manuscripts, and shelves filled with early American domestic utensils. The reverse, bears a detailed institutional summary titled "Washington Head-q'rtrs. / Newburgh, N.Y." The text notes that the window to the left faces the Hudson River and points out the gravesite of Uzal Knapp, the last surviving member of Washington's Life Guard, visible outside. It identifies the interior spaces as Alexander Hamilton’s room and Washington’s private room, and includes remarkable museum data stating that up to 1873, the site's official visitor logs recorded over 235,000 names.

6. Close-Up Study of a Historic Hessian Riding Boot (Bottom Left): A striking, close-up portrait of a massive, rigid leather military riding boot outfitted with a heavy iron spur and an intricate decorative metal plate on the lower counter. The reverse features a bold, concise ink label reading "Washington’s Head-quarters / Newburgh, N.Y. / A Hessian Boot." This object represents an iconic piece of Revolutionary War material culture captured from German mercenary troops, which was displayed inside the headquarters room documented in View 4.

7. Full Exterior View of the Hasbrouck House from the Lawn (Bottom Right): A clear, balanced eye-level exterior view capturing the entire length of the stone Hasbrouck House under its expansive timber roof, showing several visitors posed near the front porch and open windows. The reverse features a highly detailed entry titled "Washington’s Head-quarters / Newburgh, N.Y." The text provides an analytical breakdown of the exterior architecture, detailing the composition of the fieldstone walls, tracking the layout of the side entry doors, and recording historical observations from the visit.

The orange cardstock mounts remain structurally flat and rigid with light corner bumping, while the albumen photographs retain very good detail and pleasing contrast despite typical, minor scattered foxing and edge fading.
