A trio of hanger swords used by Hessians, German mercenaries employed by the British during 18th century, including:
1. With a squared knucklebow, ovoid pommel, and single counter-guard, marked "C H". Ex-Morris Museum. Blade 22 3/4 in. Overall 29 in. long.
An attached tag asserts that the sword was captured at the Battle of Trenton. The battle, preluded by George Washington's renowned crossing of the Delaware River the night prior, saw the crippled Continental forces ambush and overtake four Hessian regiments. A majority of the mercenaries surrendered and the Battle of Trenton inspired a boost in Continental morale and enlistments. The reverse of the tag states that the sword was donated to the "Morris Town Museum" before being sold in the 1950s, corroborated by a painted museum serial number and sticker.
There is some pitting to the blade and the brass presents a dark patina.
2. With a rounded knucklebow, egg-shaped pommel, and dual symmetrical counter-guards. Blade 24 3/4 in. Overall 31 in. long.
There is some battle damage but the blade and hilt remain relatively clean.
3. With an ovoid pommel and dual asymmetrical counter-guards. Blade 22 3/4 in. Overall 27 5/8 in. long.
The knuckle bow is entirely absent, though appears to have once been reattached per the remnants of solder. The blade is darkly patinated with some rust, and the hilt exhibits some light verdigris.
