Two (2) rare broadsides, published as extras by the National Intelligencer, printing the 1826 and 1868 Presidential State of the Union addresses of President John Quincy Adams.
1. President's Message. National Intelligencer....Extra. Washington, D.C.: National Intelligencer, 5 December 1826. 1 page, 17 3/4 x 22 in.
2. President's Message. National Intelligencer....Extra. Washington, D.C.: National Intelligencer, 2 December 1828. 1 page, 14 3/4 x 21 3/8 in. Contemporary ink inscription to verso reads: "Adams / Presidents Message / 1828".
The first broadside prints John Quincy Adams's second Annual Message, delivered during the 50th Anniversary of American Independence. The message reflects on the impressive strides of the nascent nation, emphasizing American stability in both foreign and domestic affairs. Adams also addresses the deaths of Thomas Jefferson and his father, John Adams, both of whom died on July 4th earlier in the year, concluding his address: "They departed cheered by the benedictions of their country, to whom they left the inheritance of their fame and the memory of their bright example."
The 1828 address, the last Annual Message of his presidency, focuses broadly on foreign affairs and domestic developments, including federal funding for the United States Military Academy at West Point.
VERY RARE, OCLC locates only 2 copies of the 1826 address, and only 1 copy of the 1828 address. Scarce at auction.
