1884 REPUBLICAN TICKET FEATURING JAMES G. BLAINE & JOHN A. LOGAN
The Republican Ticket. New Hampshire, 1884. Approx. 6 1/4 x 12 3/4 in. With portraits of James G. Blaine and John A. Logan for the presidential office.
An attractive, large and patriotic broadside for the New Hampshire Republican ticket of 1884. It was promoting James G. Blaine for president and John A. Logan for vice president. It also includes the nominated individuals for presidential electors, representatives in Congress, governor, councillor, senator and county officers.
The 1884 U.S. presidential election saw Blaine and Logan go against the Democratic ticket of Grover Cleveland and Thomas A. Hendricks, who won by just 0.5%. Blaine had served as Secretary of State under President Garfield but was labeled as corrupt for a series of letters showing that Blaine had sold his influence in Congress to various businesses. Additionally, in the final week of the campaign, a large group of Republicans switched sides at the last minute when a reverend spokesman used an anti-Catholic slur in his speech — the Democrats quickly realized this and made sure to smear Blaine's campaign. In the end, Blaine still only narrowly lost the election.
