This portrait, taken in 1974, was captured by Mimi Jacobs (1911-1999), a San Fransisco Bay area photographer best known for her portraits of prominent artists and public figures. This photograph of Adams was taken in her studio, and is often used in public exhibitions of Adams' work.
Ansel Adams, a renowned photographer and environmentalist, is best known for his signature black-and-white images of landscapes, particularly of the American West. Many of his photographs were in support of conservation efforts, and therefore frequently found himself working in collaboration with organizations like the Sierra Club and the United States Department of the Interior. These efforts to document and preserve the natural landscapes of the United States earned Adams the Presidential Medal of Freedom, which he was awarded in 1980.
