A black & white image of Half Dome and the Merced River in Yosemite National Park during the winter. Likely taken around 1938, this photograph in Ansel Adam's (1902-1984) distinct sharp focused style was later published as prints beginning in the 50s and 60s for promotional materials for the National Park Service. The NPS regularly commissioned Adams for his work.
Ansel Adams, a renowned photographer and environmentalist, is best known for his signature black-and-white images of landscapes, particularly of the American West. Many of his photographs were in support of conservation efforts, and therefore frequently found himself working in collaboration with organizations like the Sierra Club and the United States Department of the Interior. These efforts to document and preserve the natural landscapes of the United States earned Adams the Presidential Medal of Freedom, which he was awarded in 1980.
