An Osage “Big Moon” Gourd Rattle with Openwork Wooden Handle, Beadwork, and Crucifix Pendant. First half of the twentieth century. Approximately 26 inches long.
An elaborate Osage peyote rattle distinguished by a long, pierced wooden handle and finely worked bands of white-ground beadwork. The rounded gourd retains a lustrous amber-brown surface, its comparatively plain body contrasting with the intricate ornament above and below. A short beaded projection rises from the crown and supports a red-dominant tuft with smaller multicolored feather accents.
The central handle is cut with elongated, oblique openings separated by narrow diagonal ribs. These apertures introduce an open, almost spiraling effect into the otherwise straight shaft, emphasizing the maker’s control of both the wood’s surface and the spaces cut through it. Beaded collars frame the openwork, combining white fields with angular designs in translucent red, green, yellow, blue, and pink. Long, twisted hide fringe and narrow fur strips descend from the base, accompanied by dark metal ornaments and a small crucifix.
The “Big Moon” designation identifies a distinct ceremonial tradition associated with the Caddo-Delaware religious leader John Wilson, known as Moonhead, whose teachings became influential among Osage, Delaware, and Quapaw communities in the late nineteenth century. Its history reflects the transmission and adaptation of religious practice between neighboring Native nations.
The crucifix attached to the example offered here makes Christian imagery an explicit part of its ornament, while the gourd, beadwork, and suspended materials retain the characteristic form of a Native American Church musical instrument.
A distinctive example in which accomplished openwork carving gives unusual lightness and complexity to the elongated ceremonial form.
