An Osage “Little Moon” Native American Church Gourd Rattle with Geometric Beadwork and Hide Fringe. From Pawhuska, Oklahoma.

A richly ornamented Osage rattle with a golden-brown gourd mounted on a slender shaft, the exposed length closely covered with multicolored glass beadwork. Light blue establishes the principal ground, interrupted by darker blue passages, narrow encircling bands, and geometric devices in red, yellow, orange, green, white, and black. The short projection above the gourd repeats the beaded decoration and terminates in a predominantly red tuft with smaller accents of contrasting color.

The lower shaft carries a particularly varied succession of designs, including stepped forms, small crosslike arrangements, and green-centered diamonds outlined in black. Pale, twisted hide fringe descends from the base, several strands bearing dark, fluted beads. A small white-metal cross hangs beside the fringe, adding a further devotional element to the ensemble.

The beadwork follows the cylindrical surface closely, allowing the ornament to continue around the shaft rather than remaining confined to a single face. This tubular method, commonly called peyote stitch, is well suited to the decoration of handles and other rounded forms; its continuing importance within Osage artistic practice is reflected in instruction offered through the Nation’s Wah-Zha-Zhi Cultural Center.

Gourd rattles hold an essential musical role in Native American Church worship, accompanying sacred singing together with the water drum during night-long meetings. The instrument’s significance consequently extends beyond its appearance: it belongs to a setting in which musical performance is itself an act of devotion.

A handsome example distinguished by the extensive ornament of its shaft, the warmth of the unadorned gourd, and the varied pendants gathered beneath the grip.
