A Kiowa “Little Moon” Native American Church Gourd Rattle with Geometric Beadwork and Twisted Hide Fringe. Southern Plains.
A finely proportioned Kiowa rattle combining a polished golden-brown gourd, a reddish wooden shaft, and closely worked bands of multicolored beadwork. Deep blue predominates in the longer lower panel, where stepped and zigzagging lines in turquoise, green, red, and yellow extend along the handle. Denser passages of white, pink, pale blue, and green frame these darker areas, introducing a lighter register of color at the ends.
A substantial portion of the central grip remains exposed, its smooth wood separating the beaded section beneath the gourd from the longer panel below. Above the gourd, a short beaded finial terminates in a red tuft. Long, pale strands of twisted hide fringe fall from the base, their restrained color providing a counterpoint to the saturated beadwork.
The Kiowa, together with Apache and Comanche practitioners, played a formative role in the development of the Little Moon ceremony, one of the principal traditions through which peyote worship spread beyond the Southern Plains. This history places Kiowa ceremonial instruments within an influential network of religious and artistic exchange rather than an isolated local practice.
The associated musical tradition also has an important documentary record. The Library of Congress catalogs peyote singing by the Kiowa musician Belo Cozad, recorded in Oklahoma by Willard Rhodes in 1941. Such records provide a historical musical counterpart to surviving rattles, whose appearance alone cannot convey the sung prayer they accompanied.
The example offered here is distinguished by its deep blue palette, the clarity of its stepped ornament, and the measured alternation of beaded and undecorated surfaces.
