[NATIVE AMERICAN] c. 1900 Beaded Bridle with Iron Bit, Probably Blackfoot

A Northern Plains Beaded Bridle, Likely Blackfoot. Circa 1900. Glass beads, cloth, hide, metal fittings, and a small feather tuft.

An extensively beaded bridle with broad white bands ornamented by repeated stepped lozenges. Red centers are enclosed by green and dark brown borders, producing compact geometric devices along the browband, noseband, and cheekpieces. Dark fabric edging defines the straps, while the reverse reveals their cloth backing. A small reddish feather tuft accents the upper band.

Hide attachments connect the decorated headstall to a metal curb bit with elongated shanks, lower rings, and a curb chain. The regular spacing of the beaded motifs gives visual continuity to the separate straps, allowing the same pattern to articulate both the horizontal bands and the longer vertical elements.

Decorated bridles belong to a wider Plains tradition of elaborately furnished horses. Makers adapted beadwork and other forms of ornament to equipment constructed from hide, hair, and cloth; surviving examples combine these materials with metal bits and fittings. The National Museum of the American Indian’s A Song for the Horse Nation includes late nineteenth- and early twentieth-century bridles that demonstrate this range of construction.

Such furnishings also participated in public display. Mounted processions offered occasions to demonstrate family accomplishment and the artistry invested in horse equipment, a practice that continued at fairs and other gatherings during the reservation period. The example offered here brings that broader history into focus through a restrained palette and the consistent repetition of a single geometric device.
