A Group of Four Beaded Hide Pouches for Peyote Chief Buttons, Together with a Rosette-Form Pin.

A varied group of small beaded hide objects, comprising four pouches and a separate rosette-form pin. The pouches range from elaborately fringed, circular forms to a comparatively plain drawstring bag, each distinguished by an individual arrangement of color and ornament.

One example, fashioned from bright yellow-colored hide, bears a white-ground roundel with a blue central star, dark angular outlines, and fine radiating lines of multicolored beads. Long, narrow hide fringe descends beneath the body. A second, in warm brown hide, has elongated attachment tabs and a circular design of alternating red, white, and blue wedges surrounding a domed metal button. Its comparatively broad strips of fringe provide a textural contrast to the finer strands of the yellow pouch.

A third pouch combines a large roundel with a smaller circular element above. Red lines radiate across a white field over a green lower segment, with concentric blue, black, and red borders and a substantial fall of twisted hide fringe. The fourth is a small, softly gathered hide bag with a drawstring closure and an applied blue-dominant rosette. Completing the group is a beaded pin in the form of a circular rosette with two short pendant tabs.

The identification of these pouches with “Chief Peyote” gives their small scale and careful ornament a specific devotional context. In Native American Church practice, Chief Peyote occupies a place of honor on the ceremonial altar. Small decorated containers were used to preserve and carry such revered objects.

Considered together, the pieces offer an engaging study in the treatment of a compact devotional form, with radial beadwork, contrasting hide colors, and differing types of fringe giving each pouch a distinct character.
