[NATIVE AMERICAN] Native American Church, Carved & Beaded Drumstick and Drum Tightener
c. 1950
A finely worked wooden drumstick and accompanying drum tightener, both fashioned from dark brown wood and embellished with closely corresponding bands of multicolored glass beadwork. The drumstick has a long, slender shaft with a rounded striking end, expanding toward a carved handle ornamented with interlacing and geometric designs. The shorter tightener tapers to a narrow working point, its butt incised with intersecting diagonal lines. On each implement, a beaded collar combines white and dark blue angular elements with vivid red-orange and lighter blue accents, providing a concentrated passage of color against the polished wood.
These implements belong to the material tradition of the Native American Church, in which the water drum and gourd rattle accompany songs performed during all-night peyote services. The drum is commonly assembled from a metal kettle containing water, with a hide membrane secured over its mouth by cordage. Maintaining the moisture and tension of the hide is essential to its distinctive sound. The drumstick supplies the rhythmic accompaniment, while the tapered tightening tool assists in manipulating the cordage used to secure the drumhead. The two objects thus serve complementary roles in the preparation and performance of ceremonial music.
Carving and beadwork give these functional implements considerable scope for individual expression. Documented Native American Church equipment includes both carved wooden drumsticks and beaded drum-head tightening sticks, placing the examples offered here within an established tradition of carefully ornamented ceremonial tools. Their corresponding beadwork and carved details lend the pair a particularly cohesive appearance, balancing the restrained contours of the working ends with the more elaborate treatment of the handles.
