[NATIVE AMERICAN] c. 1890 Sioux Catlinite Pipe with Green-Painted Stem and Beaded Drop

A Sioux Catlinite Pipe and Decorated Wooden Stem. Northern Plains, circa 1890.

An elegantly proportioned pipe combining a polished red catlinite bowl with an elongated, green-painted wooden stem. The stone is carved in a T-shaped configuration, its upright cylindrical bowl rising above a horizontal shank that extends into a gently tapering forward projection. Groups of closely spaced parallel lines encircle the bowl and both ends of the shank, while curved linear ornament emphasizes their junction. This restrained decoration articulates the pipe’s sculptural form without interrupting the broad, smooth surfaces of the reddish stone.

The wooden stem presents a striking contrast in both color and texture. Its deep green surface is interrupted by an enlarged collar set with rounded metal tacks, beside which a small beaded hide ornament is secured. Curving rows of white, red, and blue beads form a compact, fanlike pattern, with long hide thongs descending below. Larger red and blue beads punctuate these pendants, introducing movement beneath the strong horizontal line of the stem.

Catlinite, the red pipestone associated particularly with the quarries in present-day southwestern Minnesota, has long been valued for its combination of workability, durability, and rich color. Among Sioux and other Plains peoples, pipes held important places in prayer, ceremony, diplomacy, and social exchange. Their familiar designation as “peace pipes” reflects only one aspect of a much broader cultural role; ceremonial smoking also accompanied councils, trade, and preparations for warfare.

The example offered here brings together several distinct forms of craftsmanship: stone carving, the shaping and painting of wood, and the delicate application of beadwork. Its visual distinction lies especially in the juxtaposition of polished red stone and deep green pigment, with the suspended ornament providing a finely textured counterpoint. A compelling example of late nineteenth-century Sioux pipe artistry, distinguished by its assured proportions and unusual color contrast.
