[NATIVE AMERICAN] c. 1910 Blackfoot Boy’s Beaded and Painted Hide Shirt with Leggings
A Blackfoot Boy’s Shirt and Leggings. Northern Plains, circa 1910.
A handsome boy’s hide shirt distinguished by broad turquoise-blue beaded strips, painted ornament, and flowing fringe. Paired bands descend from the shoulders on both faces, their pale blue grounds enclosing elongated green diamonds framed by opposing red, forked devices. Dark blue accents punctuate the ends, while short hide fringes finish the lower edges. The arrangement establishes a strong vertical rhythm, setting the saturated colors of the beadwork against the softly textured, cream-colored hide.
Tapering panels beneath the neckline carry successive V-shaped bands of turquoise-blue beads interrupted by red passages, with cut-hide fringe following their borders. Longer fringe extends from the sleeves and sides, and slender dark hair pendants accompany the beaded strips on one face. Across the lower body, scattered dark painted devices, each comprising a small oval with a trailing, curved line, introduce a freer pattern beneath the ordered geometry of the upper decoration. A roughly notched lower edge completes the garment’s distinctive silhouette.
The shirt belongs to the clothing traditions of the Blackfoot, or Niitsitapi, peoples of the Northern Plains. The preparation and ornamentation of such garments drew upon substantial technical knowledge: women prepared hides, cut and sewed clothing, and worked the finely controlled beadwork through which individual artistry found expression. Historic Blackfoot dress encompassed carefully decorated clothing for children as well as adults, extending this artistic vocabulary into the life of the family.
Here, the shoulder bands, fringed neck panels, and painted hide bring the visual character of an adult shirt into a child’s garment. Its appeal rests in the balance between emphatic geometric ornament and the open expanses of pale hide, enlivened by the irregular movement of painted forms and pendant fringe. An engaging expression of Blackfoot dressmaking, preserving the care and artistic ambition invested in a boy’s attire.
