A Pair of Kiowa Beaded Hide Women’s Boot Moccasins. Southern Plains, circa 1890.

A lovely pair of women’s boot moccasins, fashioned from yellow hide with tall legging uppers, broad turned-down cuffs, and hide ties. Narrow bands of glass beadwork in white, brick red, light blue, and dark blue frame the elongated lower panels, enclosing alternating diamond and circular devices. Concentric outlines emphasize the geometric motifs, their open centers allowing the warm ground to remain integral to the design. Related diamond ornaments embellish the insteps, while further beaded bands articulate the ankles and heel seams above separately attached hide soles.

The composition derives much of its distinction from the relationship between expansive, undecorated surfaces and carefully placed ornament. The narrow borders accentuate the vertical form, while the alternating angular and rounded motifs establish a measured decorative rhythm. This selective application of beadwork, preserving broad areas of colored hide, accords with documented nineteenth-century Kiowa preferences for painted surfaces enlivened by relatively restrained beaded decoration.

Commonly termed legging moccasins, this form combined footwear and leg coverings in a single garment and was characteristic of women’s dress on the Southern Plains. Its extended uppers provided protection for the legs while offering a substantial surface for artistic expression. Related Kiowa examples dated circa 1890 are preserved in the National Museum of the American Indian, including a pair incorporating hide, glass beads, and pigment, closely paralleling the principal materials and decorative vocabulary represented here.

The approximate date places these moccasins within the reservation period, following the confinement of the Kiowa to southwestern Indian Territory after the Red River War of 1874–75. Amid profound changes to Kiowa life, clothing and beadwork continued to provide meaningful expressions of cultural identity and individual artistry. Seen in this context, the present pair embodies the persistence of an established aesthetic through the skilled preparation, construction, and ornamentation of dress. Its visual authority rests in the assured balance of color, proportion, and finely ordered detail.
