[NATIVE AMERICAN] c. 1800 Eastern Woodlands Pipe Tomahawk with White-Metal Haft Decoration
An Eastern Woodlands Pipe Tomahawk. Circa 1800.
An Eastern Woodlands pipe tomahawk with a flaring iron blade and a compact, waisted smoking bowl opposite the cutting edge. Fine parallel lines mark the transition between the eye and blade, while a small notch interrupts the lower shoulder. The brown wooden haft is ornamented with white-metal bands incorporating rectangular openings, pointed elements beneath the head, and a metal terminal at the mouthpiece end. A further metal fitting caps the upper end of the wood.
The pipe tomahawk emerged from the commercial and diplomatic exchanges of eighteenth-century North America. Its manufacture brought together the work of blacksmiths and the preferences of Native customers, combining a metal hatchet with a smoking bowl connected to a passage through the handle. The resulting object could serve several purposes, and its value frequently extended beyond its usefulness as a tool.
By the late eighteenth century, pipe tomahawks had become established diplomatic gifts. The example presented by George Washington to the Seneca leader Cornplanter during meetings in 1792–1794 offers a particularly well-documented instance of their role in relations between Native nations and the United States. Such presentations recognized political standing and accompanied negotiations in which tobacco and gift exchange already held significance.
The circa 1800 date for this piece places it within that period of active exchange. Its restrained metal decoration gives particular attention to the haft, dividing the length of the wood into measured intervals and emphasizing the relationship between the smoking bowl, handle, and mouthpiece.
