[NATIVE AMERICAN] Plains Spike Axe with File-Branded Ash Handle

A Plains Spike Axe with Decorated Ash Haft.

A Plains spike axe fitted with a long, tapering metal point and a short, squared opposing poll. Closely spaced transverse grooves articulate the central portion of the head, introducing a band of ornament at the junction with the shaft. The ash handle is slender and gently contoured, with a small perforation near the butt and a succession of dark branded bands extending along much of its length.

The handle’s decoration is executed in the technique commonly termed file branding or hot-file marking. A heated file was applied to the wood to produce patterned scorches, allowing the maker to ornament the surface without adding separate materials. Here, the broad dark passages alternate with intervals of exposed ash, giving the haft a striped appearance that remains legible at a distance.

Such attention to the handle belongs to a wider Plains practice of adapting and personalizing metal-headed implements. The finished object depended on the relationship between metalwork and woodworking: the head supplied the working form, while the haft determined its balance, handling, and much of its individual appearance. Decorated handles could distinguish objects whose metal components otherwise followed familiar patterns.

The example offered here is particularly spare in its construction. Its elongated spike, compact poll, and narrow shaft establish a sharply defined profile, while the branded ash provides the principal decorative emphasis.

A fine example.
