[NATIVE AMERICAN] 1890s Potawatomi Man’s Shirt with Loom-Woven Beadwork

A Potawatomi Man’s Cloth Shirt with Loom-Woven Beaded Panels. Circa 1890s. Cloth, glass beads, ribbon, and yarn.

A dark cloth man’s shirt with long sleeves and a straight, elongated body, ornamented with substantial panels of loom-woven beadwork. Broad beaded bands cross the shoulders, while two long panels descend over the front. Against white grounds, repeated dark violet-blue and pale green triangles form carefully ordered rows, their alternating orientations producing a lively pattern of diagonals.

The shoulder bands and front panels terminate in narrow beaded tabs tipped with yellow and green yarn tufts. Bright pink ribbon outlines the neck opening, cuffs, and hem, with free ends extending below the neckline and at the lower sides. The largely undecorated cloth allows the woven panels to dominate the garment, emphasizing their length and the precision of their repeated motifs.

Loom-woven ornament has a documented place in Potawatomi men’s dress. On the example offered here, the beadwork follows and extends the structure of the shirt: horizontal bands broaden the shoulders, while the paired front panels establish its vertical proportions. The small pendant tabs and yarn tufts soften this formal arrangement, giving the garment an interplay of woven pattern, ribbon borders, and freely moving details.
