Two dramatic paintings depicting times of both violence and peace experienced by soldiers during the War of the Sixth Coalition, also known as the "Liberation War".

The first painting shows seven Prussian soldiers hunkered down, inside a building, doors off their hinges and window panes blown out. Taking cover behind toppled furniture, the men look for their unseen enemy in the street of destroyed houses and wreckage. All wear uniforms, some still donning their shakos.  Fought in the Spring Campaign of 1813, the Prussian and Russian troops decisively defeated the Imperial French forces.

In peaceful contrast, the second view shows soldiers wearing overcoats and plumed shakos resting at a well. One soldier even kneels down to give a drink to a thirsty canine friend. A multitude of soldiers walk past in the background.

Keith Rocco is a master of historical narrative art, capturing military detail and human nuance.
