A trio of m1832 artillery short swords, produced by N. P. Ames at Springfield. The m1832 was inspired by the French m1816, which in turn drew inspiration from the Roman gladius. The swords are as follows:

1. Complete in partial leather scabbard. Ricasso clearly marked "N. P. Ames / Springfield" below a federal eagle, worn; ricasso reverse marked "United / States / 1833 / US." Blade 19 1/8 in. Overall 25 1/8 in. Though there is a subtle dark patina to the blade and hilt, and though the blade exhibits some battlefield wear and minor rusting and the hilt retains traces of brown wax or resin, this is a fine example of a second-year production throughout.

2. Ricasso marked "N. P. Ames / Sp[ringfield]"; ricasso reverse, "U.S. / JCH". Blade 19 in. Overall 25 in. long. The blade exhibits some pitting, particularly towards the tip, and the hilt presents a dark patina with traces of verdigris.

3. Ricasso markings illegible; ricasso reverse marked "United / States / 1835". Blade 18 1/8 in. Overall 24 1/4 in. long. There is both pitting and signs of significant battlefield wear to the blade, and the brass hilt, though largely clean, exhibits traces of verdigris as well as separations: there is a split at the pommel that extends along the grip on one side, and there are two large holes to the interior of the guard. The guard appears to have been crudely cast.
