The Springfield M1884 was a service rifle featuring a trapdoor breachblock. Produced by the Springfield Armory for the United States military, it served as an improved replacement for the Springfield 1873. Incorporated into its new design was a serrated trigger and a new rear sight which had been designed by Colonel Adelbert R. Buffington of the U.S. Army Ordnance Department.
