[MILITARIA] Civil War Era Drum Major's Baton

Drum major's baton with wood shaft and decorative cord wrapping in "X" or diamond pattern, 46 in. overall from silver bulb at head to heavy metal ferrule tip, approx. 3 5/8 in. diam. bulb crown.

 

This tall, decorative mace was used by a principal musician to visually signal drum and fife lines, acting as a primary tool for military musicians who were relaying tactical orders across chaotic battlefields. The drum major was a non-commissioned staff officer.

 

A rarely encountered artifact from the Civil War-era.
