Brigadier General Z. Taylor
Pen and ink on paper
Unsigned
9 x 10 7/8 inches (sight), framed to 11 x 13 inches.
Drawn after the widely circulated 1846 color lithograph by New York printmaker James Baillie (American, active c. 1838–1855). A career officer in the United States Army, future president Zachary Taylor (1784–1850) was promoted to Brigadier General on December 25, 1837, following his exemplary leadership at the Battle of Lake Okeechobee during the Second Seminole War. However, it was his brilliant string of victories during the Mexican-American War that transformed Taylor into a national hero, ultimately propelling him to the White House in the election of 1848.
