[Alain Manesson Mallet (1630-1706).] Amerique Septentrionale. Copper engraving on paper. [Frankfurt: Anton Heinscheidt for Johann Adam Jung, 1719]. Image 114 x 152 mm (4 1/2 x 6 in.), sheet 165 x 203 mm (6 1/2 x 8 in.) Verso blank. From Beschreibung des gantzen Welt-Kreises. [Description of the World.]

An attractive 1719 map of North America, notably featuring California as an island, labeled "I. California". Originally drafted and published in 1683 by Alain Mallet in Description de l'univers. The plates were transferred the next year to Jan David Zunner in Frankfurt who published the first edition of the German translation in 1684. This copy reportedly comes from the 1719 second edition of the German translation, printed by Anton Heinscheidt for Johann Adam Jung, also in Frankfurt. The same plates were used, though some were reengraved, with no immediately discernible differences between 1684 and 1719 editions of this map.

A highly presentable early map of America featuring the oddity of California as an island.
