.35 caliber. 42" pinned octagonal barrel. NSN. Browned finish, brass furniture, faux finished hardwood stock. Single shot percussion muzzleloading rifle with dovetailed semi-buckhorn rear sight, dovetailed Rocky Mountain blade front sight, double set triggers, a sheet brass repair at the wrist and an old wood ramrod that is short of full length, retained by two thimbles and an entry pipe. Commercial percussion lock is unmarked with traces of light decorative engraving. Barrel with a crude, long, drum bolster, likely a period repair. Top flat of barrel marked "MOLL" and "ALLENTOWN PA" and "750".

The Molls were a celebrated multigenerational gunmaking family based in Pennsylvania with the patriarch William Moll (I) operating in Lehigh County during the mid-18th century. William's son John established the Allentown based gun business after the Revolutionary War and operated it until his death in 1794. Thereafter his son John Moll (II) took over and he and then his sons and grandsons ran the business until it closed in 1883. This is a solid example of a circa 1840s Moll Rifle that shows real world use and has a nice, well used look. {ANTIQUE}

Good. Bore dark, rusted and pitted with very weak rifling. Metal with some traces of finish, mixed with moderate oxidation and some pitting and surface roughness. The area around the barrel marking has been cleaned to make them more visible. Brass with a medium golden patina. Lock is mechanically functional with no half cock. Wood with moderate wear, an old repair at the wrist with sheet brass and some chipped and repaired wood around the lock mortise. Wood with numerous scattered bumps, dings and mars and with some loss to the faux striped finish due to wear.
