Bust-length profile portrait of Abraham Lincoln. Steel plate engraving. Philadelphia: John Sartain, engraver, circa 1865. Visible 4 x 6 1/4 in., framed to 7 x 9 in.

A fine portrait of Abraham Lincoln by renowned engraver John Sartain (1808-1897) after the famous photographic "Penny Pose" portrait taken by Anthony Berger, manager of Mathew Brady's gallery, on 9 February 1864 (Meserve O-88 & O-89).

The portrait is a masterful example of Sartain's signature velvety textures and exquisite details.

VERY RARE. We located only one other copy, held at the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts (1948.23.473), which was notably bequeathed to the museum by Dr. Paul J. Sartain (1862-1944), the grandson of the artist.
