After Mathew Brady. Gelatin photograph. [Hartford, Connecticut]: E.B. Eaton, 1907. 7 1/2 x 9 1/2 in., to 11 x 13 1/2 in. mount. Publisher's copyright in negative. Informational caption and presentation in autograph note by S.A. McNeil, dated 1 March 1908.
A view of Abraham Lincoln, Allan Pinkerton, and Major General John McClernand, originally taken by Mathew Brady on 3 October 1862 at Sharpsburg, Maryland.
This is a significant photograph, as Eaton was officially authorized to make copies from the negative. Edward Bailey Eaton of Hartford, Connecticut, was the author and publisher of the book, Original Photographs taken on the Battlefields during the Civil War of the United States. This book was published in 1907 and comprised selected images from 7,000 original negatives owned by Eaton. Those images credited to Brady were taken by Alexander Gardner.
The view was taken when President Lincoln visited General McClernand at his headquarters after the Battle of Antietam to personally urge him to pursue Robert E. Lee's retreating Army of Northern Virginia.
A nice veteran era image of a consequential meeting of President Lincoln and General McClernand.
