Note: Please see Day 3 (October 11) of the sale that features rare material relating to the Gettysburg Address.
The New-York Times. Vol. X, No. 2949. New York, 5 March 1861. 8 pages, folio, 15 1/2 x 22 5/8 in. Disbound.
A rare New York Times issue published the day after President Abraham Lincoln's first inauguration. The issue dedicates the entire front page and most of pages 4 and 8 to the inauguration festivities, the multitude of speeches delivered, and opinions on the new administration.
A small opinion paragraph remarks: "The Inaugural will put a check on much of the absurd expectations which have been entertained by ambitious individuals, of ruling Mr. Lincoln and making him subordinate to personal and factious objects. It is generally conceded now that he is not only quite competent, but very much disposed, to do his own thinking, and to act upon the results of his own reflections." (p.4).
A rare Lincoln moment from New York's newspaper of record.
