An individual standing half-length portrait carte de visite of President Abraham Lincoln, captured from life by Mathew Brady on 9 February 1864. The reverse displays a backmarkmark reading "Published by E. & H.T. Anthony, 501 Broadway, New York. From Photographic Negative in Brady’s National Portrait Gallery."
Cataloged as Meserve No. 85 (Ostendorf O-92), this scarce likeness stems from the legendary winter 1864 sitting that produced the definitive portrait utilized for the United States five-dollar bill. The composition resolves a stately three-quarter view of Lincoln standing with his left hand casually tucked behind his back while his right hand rests near his trousers pocket. Because this portrait was captured later in the war, its production window before the assassination was significantly shorter than the 1862 sittings, making authentic, sharp wartime Anthony prints of this standing pose quite scarce on the open market.
The print is in very good to fine condition, retaining strong contrast, rich tones, and an untrimmed mount.
