RARE INTRA-GHETTO ENVELOPE 

Envelope from Izaak Chaim in the Tarnów Ghetto to Lew Berman of the Warsaw Ghetto. Nazi censorship stamp in red and black over recipient. Tarnów cancel. With Tarnów Judenrat stamp to verso. Approx. 5 3/4 x 4 5/8 in.

A rare envelope sent between two Polish Jews, each living in separate ghettos. The verso bears a clear stamp of theTarnów Judenrat [Jewish Council], who were tasked with setting up the ghetto post offices and mail service. 

Isaiah Trunk details the development of the Ghetto post offices, in an agreement made on 15 January 1941, "The Council would handle all outgoing and incoming mail, using persons authorized for this work; that the German post office would arrange a special exchange office; and that the Jewish Council would pay for the maintenance of this office while making a cash accounting on a daily basis. With small differences, this agreement was incorporated into the order regulating mail service in the ghettos." (pp. 179). 

Intra-ghetto mail ephemera is extremely scarce.
