Seated studio portrait of General John Buford (1826-1863) in uniform. Albumen CDV. New York: Brady/Anthony, n.d. Period ink inscription to mount recto identifies the subject. Brady/Anthony National Portrait Gallery imprint to mount verso.

A West Point graduate and Kentucky native, Buford remained loyal to the United States and took command of a cavalry brigade under Major General John Pope. He distinguished himself and was wounded in action at Second Bull Run, and saw further action at Antietam.

He is best remembered for his pivotal action and decision-making on the first day of the Battle of Gettysburg. His cavalry division engaged the advancing Confederates along Herr Ridge, McPherson Ridge, and Seminary Ridge, providing essential time for the infantry to occupy the vital defensive positions on Cemetery Hill and Cemetery Ridge.

Buford became ill with typhoid in December 1863. On his deathbed, he received promotion to Major General for his distinguished and meritorious service at the Battle of Gettysburg. He died the same day.

A fine portrait of the Gettysburg hero.
