Whole-plate collodion ambrotype on glass, housed beneath an oval stamped gilt brass mat with heavily chased rococo scrollwork border and foliate preserver, enclosed in a monumentally sized thermoplastic Union case (Berg 1-1, "Washington Crossing the Delaware") lined with deep plum velvet. Ca. late 1850s to early 1860s. Case measures approx. 6 1/2 x 7 3/4 in.; visible plate aperture approx. 4 1/2 x 6 in.
An extraordinary, museum-caliber tour-de-force combining two of the most celebrated icons in 19th-century American material culture: a large-scale outdoor landscape ambrotype of Niagara Falls and the ultimate patriotic thermoplastic case.
The image captures an expansive, outdoor scenic view from the Canadian side of Niagara Falls. Assembled on a grassy vantage point in the right foreground is an extended, nine-member family gathering spanning three generations, including seated and standing ladies, an infant in arms, and men resting comfortably on the knoll. In the sweeping background behind them, the majestic arc of Horseshoe Falls plunges into a dense wall of rising mist, with the distinctive shelf of Table Rock silhouetted dramatically against the gorge.
Outdoor wet-plate collodion exposures of this scale and complexity were immense technical feats. Achieving sharp focal clarity across nine living sitters outdoors while simultaneously capturing the rushing cataract and atmospheric mist without blowing out the sky required a virtuoso local operator. We believe this is the work of the esteemed Platt D. Babbitt, whose iconic open-air pavilion on the brink of the falls dominated Niagara scenic photography throughout the 1850s and 1860s.
Elevating this plate is its housing: the legendary "Washington Crossing the Delaware" thermoplastic Union case (Berg 1-1). Manufactured by Littlefield, Parsons & Co., the front cover features an intricate, high-relief molded interpretation of Emanuel Leutze’s famed 1851 patriotic masterwork. General George Washington stands resolute in a crowded flat-bottomed boat guided through crushing floes of river ice on Christmas night 1776, surrounded by soldiers, riflemen, Prince Whipple, and a standard-bearer clutching the flag.

Very good to fine condition. The ambrotype is near perfect, and displays magnificent tonal gradation, deep shadows, and razor-sharp clarity. The case is in good condition, with some loss to the lower left corner of the back half.
