Sixth plate studio portrait daguerreotype housed under an arched sand-finish gilt brass mat and simple foil preserver. N.p., ca 1849 - 1854. Pressed-leather case lined with rich plum velvet and retaining original brass closure hardware.
The quintessential, swaggering portrait capturing a California Gold Rush 49'er bristling with period sidearms.
The young adventurer stands in a three-quarter turn, meeting the camera with an unblinking, resolute gaze. He is costumed for rough travel, wearing a light-colored brimmed slouch hat cocked back on his head, a heavy double-breasted overcoat with oversized buttons, and a knotted bandanna. At his right hip rests what appears to be a Cutlery Hilt Sheffield Bowie with German silver mounts, including the frog stud. At his left hip, angled forward for an immediate draw, sits a pepperbox revolver, its cluster of fluted barrels clearly delineated against his belt and coat flap.
Before the widespread commercial availability of Samuel Colt’s 1851 Navy revolver, the multi-shot percussion pepperbox was the weapon of choice for tens of thousands of hopeful gold seekers embarking on the grueling overland trails to California. Operators catered directly to departing forty-niners, who deliberately posed armed to the teeth to send dramatic visual proof of their martial readiness back to families on the homefront.
Armed daguerreotypes of this vintage remain among the most fiercely desired artifacts in 19th-century photography.

Very good condition. The plate displays strong contrast and exceptional clarity. A natural, even tarnish ring frames the outer perimeter following the arched contour of the mat.
