Whole-plate tintype housed beneath a large oval sand-finish gilt brass mat and elaborate scrolled foliate preserver, enclosed in a full hinged pressed-leather case lined with embossed deep maroon silk plush, accompanied by an original struck-brass trade token from the establishment. Ca. 1860s to 1870s. Plate measures approx. 6 1/2 x 8 1/2 in.; case measures approx. 8 x 9 1/2 in. Token measures 24 mm.
A remarkable, large-format documentary view of life in a Western boomtown, capturing an assembled community gathered along the wooden boardwalk of a false-front establishment. Painted across the prominent parapet cornice of the two-story building is the inverted camera script reading "NORTHERN SALOON". Assembled beneath the timber post awning and along the raised plank walkway is a sprawling cross-section of townspeople: rough-hewn frontiersmen and patrons in slouch hats and vests, women in dark day dresses, local school-aged children lined along the walk, and mounted horsemen holding reins at the far right. Adding a delightful vernacular detail to the frontier storefront, multiple wire and wooden birdcages housing pet parrots or songbirds hang directly from the eaves of the porch. To the left, a traditional wooden picket fence borders an adjacent residence, while trees and a brick chimney punctuate the skyline behind the saloon.
Accompanying the plate is an exceptional, historically matching brass merchant trade token measuring 24 mm. The obverse is struck in raised relief: "THE NORTHERN / SALOON / IONE / NEVADA" flanked by decorative stars and foliate bars. The reverse reads: "GOOD FOR / ONE / DRINK" between decorative starbursts.
Founded in 1863 following rich silver strikes in the Union Mining District, Ione briefly served as the first county seat of Nye County, Nevada, from 1864 to 1867 during the peak of the Comstock and central Nevada mining boom. Like many mining centers, the town relied heavily on saloons as civic hubs, banks, and community gathering spots. While small-format cartes de visite or cabinet cards of Western mining towns appear on occasion, mammoth whole-plate tintypes of similar content are almost nonexistent in private hands.

Very good condition. The plate displays strong contrast and deep tones, revealing crisp detail to the naked eye. We note honest surface character with expected light scattered craquelure and minor edge handling. The brass token is in extremely fine condition.
