Ninth-plate studio portrait daguerreotype beneath an arched brass mat with stamped studio imprint in the upper left spandrel: "W. H. KENT / 147 OXFORD ST.", framed by a heavy diagonal-reeded brass preserver. London, England: William Horatio Kent, ca. early-to-mid 1850s. Housed in a full dark leatherette case.
A distinguished British academic portrait depicting a university scholar attired in traditional collegiate robes. Posed three-quarter standing against a neutral studio backdrop, the handsome subject faces slightly toward the left with a confident, composed expression. He wears traditional academic dress comprising a pleated academic gown over a dark tailored waistcoat, matching trousers, a white shirt with an upturned winged collar, and a wide dark neckcloth. Perched neatly upon his head is a classic square academic cap adorned with a full corner tassel.
William Horatio Kent operated his celebrated photographic rooms at 147 Oxford Street in London during the early to mid-1850s, catering to London’s professional and academic elite before expanding his operations into stereoscopic and wet-plate photography.

Very good condition. The daguerreotype exhibits crisp focus and fine midtone delineation through the scholar's face, the gather and drape of the academic gown, and the fine tassel cords of the mortarboard. The silvered plate shows light, scattered pinpoint dusting and fine wiping marks beneath the glass, with soft halo tarnish along the arched mat perimeter.
