This incredible quarter plate daguerreotype features a young man sitting on a parlor settee next to a large dog, whose head rests in the man's lap. The sitter wears a dark frock coat, light vest, and high stock collar, resting his right hand affectionately over the coat of the spaniel or other hunting breed.

Posing a large dog on studio furniture required remarkable patience and restraint from both animal and handler during the mandatory multi-second exposure, making full-length interior domestic portraits featuring larger breeds particularly scarce. Seated parlor scenes with companion animals are among the most desirable categories within 19th-century image collecting.

The plate displays fine clarity and rich contrast, exhibiting expected light peripheral tarnish along the mat edge and minor age wear to the frame housing, including a repaired crack.
