A pair of European daguerreotypes each capturing a seated sitter gently cradling a small dog in their lap. The first image depicts a woman in a traditional lace bonnet and dark day dress with her hand resting tenderly over a white-and-dark spotted dog resting across her lap. The second portrait features a distinguished gentleman in a dark frock coat, high cravat, and light-colored trousers holding a small, long-haired spaniel-type dog. Early 19th-century studio portraits incorporating live animals are notoriously difficult to execute given the long exposure times required for daguerreotypes, making clear domestic pet portraits highly desirable.
