A quintessential New England scene, reminiscent of Currier & Ives winter lithographs.
Quarter-plate horizontal outdoor scene daguerreotype. Boston: N.p., ca. 1856. Accompanied by a modern handwritten ink provenance note laid inside the case: "an original daguerreotype made in Boston about 1856." Housed in leatherette case.
A rare, idyllic antebellum winter outdoor daguerreotype capturing a family sleighing along a snow-covered New England roadway. Posed before an extensive picket fence enclosing a line of bare winter trees, a gentleman in a dark top hat and heavy winter overcoat sits beside his young son inside a light one-horse cutter sleigh. The sleigh features high curved iron runners and a paneled dashboard, harnessed to a standing draft or carriage horse facing right.
Standing at the horse's head in the snow, a second youth dressed in a dark winter coat and peaked military-style cap firmly grasps the cheekstrap of the bridle, steadying the animal during the extended outdoor exposure.
Outdoor daguerreotypes are notoriously difficult technical achievements, demanding ideal atmospheric conditions and cooperative subjects. Because cold weather dramatically slowed the chemical reactivity of sensitized daguerreian plates, outdoor winter photographs are a rare subgenre in early American photography. A quintessential piece of Bostonian Americana reminiscent of Currier & Ives winter lithographs.

Good to very good condition overall. The daguerreotype exhibits clear midtones and fine focal detail through the figures. The silvered plate shows scattered pinpoint dusting beneath the glass and characteristic peripheral tarnish along the upper and left margins, with a band of solarized blue-gray tarnish along the upper inner mat edge.
