An Intimate Portrait of an Ojibwe Woman on the Wisconsin Frontier.

Sixth-plate studio portrait daguerreotype. N.p. (possibly Wisconsin Territory), ca. early-to-mid 1850s. Housed in a full dark brown leatherette case. Identified behind the plate: "John Seymour and his Chippewa wife, Polmacoche, farmed and traded near Grindstone Rapid, now called Seymour Rapids in Wisconsin." Accompanied by a typed family provenance slip identifying John Seymour, his sister Ellen Jane Seymour (ancestor of Raleigh Johnson), and Polmacoche, along with genealogical notes tracing their 10 sons across Upper Michigan and Wisconsin.

A visually arresting, historically significant portrait of Polmacoche, a  Native American woman from the Great Lakes frontier. She looks directly into the lens with quiet poise and commanding presence, with her dark hair neatly parted at the center and gathered behind her ears, highlighting delicate pendant earrings. She is attired in an extraordinary fusion of frontier trade and Western dress: a light gathered day smock or chemise beneath a heavy, fringed wool trade shawl draped around her shoulders and crossed over her chest, with a delicate patterned lace collar showing at her throat. Her hands rest folded in her lap, fingers gently interlaced, displaying a plain wedding band on her left hand. To her left, a studio table draped in patterned damask holds a stack of books, classic daguerreian markers of literacy and domesticity.

John Seymour was a pioneer trader and farmer who established an early trading post at Grindstone Rapids along the Flambeau/Chippewa river system, later renamed Seymour Rapids in his honor. Such unions between Anglo-American fur traders and Ojibwe women formed the economic and cultural backbone of the upper Mississippi and Great Lakes trade networks, cementing familial alliances between sovereign tribal nations and frontier commerce. While the accompanying period family lore repeats typical 19th-century romanticized vernacular tropes (characterizing her as a "princess" and conflating regional tribal nations), the contemporaneous primary inscription accurately identifies her as a Chippewa woman rooted in Seymour Rapids.

Authentic, identified daguerreotypes of Native American women are exceedingly rare institutional-caliber survivors.

Very good condition. The daguerreotype exhibits excellent focus, smooth tonal transitions, and rich midtone definition. The plate surface shows scattered pinpoint dusting, a few faint wipe marks in the background field, and soft halo tarnish along the upper and left margins. Accompanied by an early typed provenance document.
