Sixth-plate studio portrait ambrotype. English, n.p., ca. late 1850s. Housed in a substantial 6 1/2 x 7 in. period dark-stained gesso and carved composition rococo wall frame embellished with deeply scrolled acanthus leaves, stylized scallop-shell crests, and floral rosettes.
A charming and well-appointed UK-made portrait presenting a young woman seated in an elevated studio setting. She gazes directly forward with a calm, resolute demeanor, her dark hair arranged in distinctive, curled lateral puffs framing her brow. She wears an eye-catching, wide-sleeved day gown tailored in a bold woven plaid, gathered at the waist and set off by an intricate white lace collar fastened with a gilded brooch and long, pointed white lappets. Resting her right elbow upon an adjacent table draped in a delicate damask coverlet, the scene is highlighted with vibrant hand-tinted sea-green pigment across the tablecloth, contrasting against a neoclassical fluted column painted on the studio backdrop behind her.
The plate is housed in an exceptional period gesso and molded wall frame featuring exuberant foliate corners, pierced scrolls, and its original multi-layered oval presentation matting. While most ambrotypes of the 1850s were mounted in standard handheld miniature cases, well-heeled sitters frequently purchased fancier parlor wall frames to display family likenesses as fine wall art.

Very good condition. The ambrotype surface exhibits crisp focus and strong contrast, retaining vibrant green hand-tinting. The heavy molded rococo frame retains a rich, dark finish with only light, honest shelf rubbing and minor hairline crazing to the raised gesso flourishes, retaining its original printed trade label on the reverse.
