Wearing a regulation major general's frock coat and shoulder straps, Custer displayed his cavalier personality with his upturned, wide-brimmed hat. Taken in May 1865 when Custer engaged both John Goldin and Mathew Brady for several portraits. It is likely contemporary with the Grand Review of the Union Armies.
